Star Trek Authority Comes to Trek Radio July 2nd

LARRY NEMECK joins Trek Radio on Saturday, July 2nd at 12:00pm Pacific Time for a live interview to discuss his latest project and how you can get involved in Star Trek history. Read the recent press release below…

Back when there was only one STAR TREK…just one storied cast…and a fandom yet to write the book on pop culture juggernauts…came the ULTIMATE FANTASY.

Star Trek author-historian Larry Nemecek takes on the role of producer for the first time to spotlight how this early-day “dream convention” instead turned into THE CON OF WRATH— and now lends its nickname to the title of a documentary that re-examines the saga of that 1982 Houston weekend, in the voices of those who had front-row seats—including Hollywood star trekkers like Walter “Chekov” Koenig and producer Harve Bennett, among the L.A. heroes.

It was supposed to be the granddaddy of all Star Trek conventions, a glitzy rock concert of an event planned to truly go where none had gone before—complete with laser shows, orchestral oomph and a revolving stage in Houston’s NBA-sized arena. Instead, fans got the mother of all meltdowns—and, numbering in the hundreds, rather than thousands, gave it the nickname that itself was a takeoff on “The Wrath of Khan,” the hit Star Trek movie sequel released only days before.

“It’s a universal ‘riches to rags to riches’ story,” Nemecek says. “There have been big fan conventions, and big convention failures, but never anything like it before or since. When turnout numbered in the hundreds, not thousands… well, like a train wreck, it was almost impossible to look away. “

The legendary Star Trek cast proved to be heroes off the screen as well, after they all decided to stay and make a stand—joining staff, vendors, and fans from all over in making sure this show must go on, too.

Archival film footage, artifacts and stills will help tell the story, along with visits to the scene today and the memories of everyone involved on all sides. Cameras are already rolling on the first memory sessions, including the actor celebs.

Be sure to tune in on Saturday, July 2nd at 12:00pm Pacific Time!!!

Trek Radio at the Kennedy Space Center – Sci-Fi Summer

Celebrating 50 Years of Manned Spaceflight, the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is holding their Sci-Fi Summer Event this year from June 11 through September 5 as a celebration of the achievements of NASA throughout the past five decades. To mark this event, the Visitor Complex is hosting Star Trek: The Exhibition in addition to their Star Trek Live Show.

If you’re not familiar with KSC, the Visitor Complex is what could be considered the privately funded public interaction arm of NASA’s spaceport complex down at Merritt Island; the center is part theme park, part education center, part museum and is operated by Delaware North Companies, Inc.

The exhibition is located in two separate galleries on premises at the Main Complex and features props and costumes from the show as well as some great faithfully recreated set displays; some of the sets prominently displayed in the galleries are the sickbay and engineering from TNG and the Original Series Bridge.

Featured as part of the experience at KSC is a shuttlecraft simulator based upon the ‘Hawking’ from The Next Generation, the ride will embark riders on an exciting adventure in the world of Star Trek.

Also on premises at the park is Star Trek Live, a stage show by Mad Science Productions featuring a plot that allows the audience to engage in Starfleet’s humble beginning, the show has been around since its premiere in 2010 and is hosted by a duo. Show attendees will have the opportunity to volunteer for demonstrations on stage and participate in an epic and fun sci-fi story.

The Kennedy Space Center has meshed the temporary and permanent Star Trek additions in their presentations during this fifty year celebration along with the NASA ‘edutainment’ featured at the park; this, after interviews on camera and discussions off camera, as a method of contrasting mankind’s achievements in space with our hopes and dreams of the future as part of the continuing effort to garner support for humanity’s continued expansion into space and the important and beneficial research that comes from it.

For this summer’s festivities, the center is holding a ‘Mission to Win’ contest, where guests can win prizes and those who have perfect scores will be entered into a drawing to go on a sub-orbital flight adventure. More details are available at http://www.kennedyspacecenter.com/trip-to-space.aspx

For the event Mighty Mundane was on hand and has provided us with a full report, images, and interviews which will be available over the coming days.     You can find photos from the event below, along with our first video report.  Please check our homepage over the next 2 days for additional video interviews and content!

Birthday Celebrations

Trek Radio’s 1st birthday approaches!  What would you like to see us do to celebrate our birthday?  A monster PVP session in Star Trek Online?  New celebrity interviews?  Something else entirely?  Let us know what you think by commenting and, if you so choose, you can record a short 30 or 60 second audio message and email it to zach@startrekradio.com letting us know what Trek Radio has meant to you over the past 12 months – what you’ve liked, what you’ve loved, and your hopes for our second year! Go for it! Don’t be shy!

Donations

Some folks in our IRC Chatroom have noted that our donations goals have been increasing as of late and have been asking the eternal question – “Why?”.  As the end of our first year on the air approaches, the time comes for us to renew our broadcast licenses and ensure that we have everything in order for our second year on the air.   To prepare for this, we have gradually notched up our required donation amounts of the past few months to allow us to build up our “Year 2 Licensing” fund.  We felt that this was better than a one of sudden increase to say, $800 or more in one month and would be less of a shock to the system!

As Trek Radio continues to grow, so do our licensing costs.  Licensing refers to the amount we must pay to copyright holders such as Sony BMG and such for the use of their music on Trek Radio.    We must pay licensing in several countries as we are a worldwide radio station and this has to be done once per year.   We also have our ongoing monthly costs such as website hosting, the dedicated server that runs our radio stream, bandwidth, advertising and so forth!

Every donation helps keep us on the internet and over the past 12 months, we have recieved over $3300 from your, our loyal listeners all of which has been put back into Trek Radio.   We hope that over the next 12 months as we continue to grow, that you will be just as generous, if not more so!

Thats all for now, so we’d just like to say Thanks for your continuing support.

Yours Forever,

The Trek Radio Team

Star Trek 2012 for PC, XB360 and PS3 Teaser Trailer!

A few days ago, we reported on the new upcoming triple-a game being developed by Paramount Digital based on the Star Trek 2009 movie franchise.

Today, out of the Sony E3 Press Conferance, we have a short 1 minute HD teaser trailer to show you all, along with some details on the PS3 version of the game!

The trailer showcases action taking place both onship and on planet surfaces, there is also a very cool space “jump” and a brief shot that shows that we will be able to pilot shuttles!

Many folks around the internet are commenting that this looks like a mashup of the Mass Effect franchise and Star Trek.  Being a huge fan of Mass Effect, I can honestly say that if this is the case, I personally would be very happy.

Phaser attachment and prequel announcement

At the press conference Sony announced that the PS3 version of the game will include a Phaser attachment for the PlayStation®Move motion controller. Also announced was a downloadable “prequel” to the game available before release exclusively on the PlayStation®Network. This prequel will also work with the PlayStation Move.

Star Trek will be coming to the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and Windows PC in 2012.
