Star Trek Beyond Fan Event

On Friday, May 20, Paramount hosted the Star Trek Beyond Fan Event, a special one-time only extravaganza celebrating the 50th anniversary of Star Trek and the upcoming release of the new film.

Taking place on the Paramount Studios lot at Stage 31 where the original series was filmed, fans in attendance were treated to the debut of the new trailer, extended scenes from the film, prop and costume displays, and a live Q&A with J.J. Abrams and director Justin Lin, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and Karl Urban, moderated by MythBusters’ Adam Savage. Video messages were also shown featuring Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana, and Stephen Colbert, as well as a video tribute to Leonard Nimoy.

During the event, the fans were moved outside to participate in a ceremony renaming the street outside the sound stage to Leonard Nimoy Way.

Of special interest to many, it was announced during the Q&A that Justin Lin was upset about the litagation against Axanar Productions’ fan film and approached Paramount pushing for it to be dropped because Lin felt allowing fan films is in the best interest of Star Trek, as fans have kept the franchise going, even going back to the letter-writing campaign to save the original series lead by Bjo Trimble. While the lawsuit will not just be “dropped”, a settlement will be announced and official guidelines for fan films will be drawn up.

Star Trek Beyond appears to be rich in action packed scenes. I feel that the fan film community adds a dynamic element to the franchise and I look forwards to it’s release on July 22.
