L.A. Comic Con 2017 Post-Convention Recap

Originally known as Comikaze, this three-day event is now in its 7th year and projects as many as 100,000 attendees. The convention hosted two national championships this year. The first, sponsored by MAC products and Makeup Artist Magazine. This year’s theme is Glamorous Undead. The con will also host the Cosplay National Championship with Queen of Cosplay Yaya Han as a judge. Participants can win a cash pool of $20,000.

Black Eyed Peas performed at the Halloween Cosplay Ball Saturday night, but that’s not all the band showed off this weekend. In partnership with Oculus, the band’s new Marvel graphic novel Masters of the Sun – The Zombie Chronicles will tell its story through virtual reality. Announced in March and written by frontman will.i.am, the comic book tells the story of a California hip-hop crew that must fight back against an alien God who comes to Earth to continue a Black Curse that turns drug dealers and gangsters into zombies. The book already stood out for its augmented reality component. Using a phone app, readers can see the book’s characters burst from the page, accompanied by an impressive score from will.i.am and Hans Zimmer. The VR component features the vocal talents of Queen Latifah, Jamie Foxx, Rosario Dawson, Stan Lee, and many more. The VR experience will launch in January 2018.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson promoted the next Jumanji film and teased a possible political career. “I think the ‘People’s President’ has a really nice ring to it. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is a sequel to the beloved 1995 action film starring Robin Williams. The new film takes place 20 years after the original and follows four high school teens who discover an old Jumanji video game. When they plug it in and select their avatars, they get sucked into the world of the game where Johnson, Gillan, Black, and Hart are their avatars. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle hits theaters Dec. 20.
