Star Trek: Discovery debuted on CBS television and the CBS ALL Access streaming service on September 24, 2017 and beginning in October fans will be able to dive deeper into the story with the debut of Discovery novels and comic books.
At the Star Trek Las Vegas 2017 convention, Simon & Schuster revealed the first Star Trek: Discovery tie-in novel, Desperate Hours, written by David Mack. The all-original new novel focuses on the backstory of Michael Burnham, the principle character of the series played by Sonequa Martin-Green. Desperate Hours tells the story of how she became the first officer of the USS Shenzhou under Captain Philippa Georgiou, portrayed in the series by Michelle Yeoh. Desperate Hours is available now.
Simon & Schuster has also announced the forthcoming second book in the Star Trek: Discovery series: Drastic Measures by Dayton Ward. Drastic Measures is set ten years before Battle at the Binary Stars seen in the series pilot episode, and tells the story of a dangerous mission of Captain Georgiou and Lieutenant Commander Gabriel Lorca.
IDW Publishing continues to expand their Star Trek license with the upcoming Star Trek: Discovery comic books.
The debut Discovery comic books will be a 4-issue mini-series co-written by Mike Johnson and Kristen Beyer focusing entirely on the Klingons. The mini-series will tell the backstory of T’Kuvma, the leader of the Klingons we meet in the series, as well as giving more details about how the Klingons of that era view the United Federation of Planets. The first issue will be released in November 2017, with the second and third issues releasing in December 2017. At STLV, IDW stated their plan is follow the Klingon mini-series with additional subsequent mini-series which will focus on different characters and events related to Discovery.
Novels and comic books have been a long-standing staple of the Star Trek franchise, and we are happy to see that tradition continue with the latest series.
