Cryptic to become a Perfect World!

Atari has found a buyer!

Perfect World, a leading online game developer and operator based in China, and Atari today announced that they have entered into an agreement whereby Perfect Worldwould acquire 100% equity interest in Cryptic Studios, a California-based online game developer from Atari, the sole shareholder of Cryptic Studios. Under the stock purchase agreement, Perfect World will pay an aggregate purchase price of approximately EUR35.0 million in cash (about $49.8 million dollars), subject to working capital and other adjustments as provided in the agreement. The consummation of the transactions contemplated in the agreement is subject to satisfaction of closing conditions.

“We are very pleased to sign the agreement to acquire Cryptic Studios,” commented Mr. Michael Chi, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Perfect World. “This strategic acquisition will add attractive game titles to our portfolio, which will help us further penetrate into the U.S. and global online game markets. More importantly, Cryptic Studios’ highly reputable development team and its technology platform will further strengthen our well-established R&D capabilities. We deem this as another noteworthy achievement of our global expansion efforts.”

The deal is another sign of the times: cash and stock-rich Chinese online game companies are flexing their muscles on the world stage of the video game market.

FedCon XX – A Look at Infinite Space + Interview coming Tomorrow [photos, video]

Whilst at FedCon XX in Dusseldorf last week, Trek Radio spent a huge amount of time hanging out with the team from Infinite Space, learning about the game, playing the available demo missions and getting top secret sneak peaks into areas of the game that we arn’t allowed to talk about right now!

During the 4 day period, DJ Bear and I must have clocked up around 2 hours of play time on the 3 demo missions of Infinite Space that were available at the convention and we honestly have to say that we are very impressed with the game.   The build of the game on display was pre-alpha so obviously it had its share of issues, however, if you blot those out of your memory for a moment, you are left with a very fun, very exciting and very interesting Star Trek game.

Speaking to members of the public around the Infinite Space booth that played the game, the thing that shocked so many people was that Infinite Space is a browser based games.   When most folks played the game for the first time, it was in full screen mode and so many people commented on how awesome the graphics are.  It was around this point that the developers chose to hit the “ESC” button to reveal that the game was taking place inside the browser; the look of awe that washed over everybodies face at this moment was completely fantastic.

The second moment of awe occured just a few seconds later when people asked that inevitable next question; how much is it going to be?  Folks almost fell of their chairs when told it would be free.

Here is a sneak peak at Infinite Space and the reactions of a couple of people that were playing it – check out this video and then read on after the jump!

Available in Full HD at www.youtube.com/trekradio

Hope you enjoyed the video.  Now, just to bottom line this for all of the people reading here, Star Trek Gamers are literally being handed a triple A massivley multiplayer game here, with fantastic graphics, playable from anywhere, in any browser that supports flash and the Unity3D engine, for absolutely nothing.  This game is absolutely awesome and its absolutely free.   What more can we say?   Well, there is one more thing we can say………..Girls like to play this game…..hot girls.

Here are a handful of pictures that we took at the booth and please keep an eye on TrekRadio.net tomorrow when we will be releasing an extensive and exclusive 35 minute interview with 2 of the games lead developers, Felix and Phillip, with occasional appearences by the head of PR for the game, Holger Zimmerman.  The first 15 minutes of the interview will be available in video format on YouTube with the entire 35 minute interview for download as an MP3 in our on-demand section here are Trek Radio.   See you tomorrow folks!

FedCon XX – Autograph Hall Interviews

A few days ago, I posted about my experiences in the Autograph Hall at FedCon XX in Dusseldorf, Germany this past week.   As well as noting down my own observations, I also spent time chatting to fans who were meeting their celebrities to get their photos, posters and in some cases, starships signed!

I spoke to several dozen people and I’ve compiled some of these chats into the following audio file for you to listen too:

In addition to this, during my time milling around the hall, I had quick chats with Garrett Wang and Marina Sirtis during short momentary breaks in their autograph lines – I have these ready for you to listen to as well, so enjoy!

FedCon XX – Autograph Session Thoughts & Photos

During the course of FedCon in Dusseldorf, Germany this last week, two large autograph sessions occured where all of the celebrities got together in the main hall and signed autographs for thousands of waiting fans.

It was an amazing thing to see – not sure much being starstruck, in fact I do not particularly get starstruck at all which incidentally, is something that several fellow guests at FedCon asked me about.  It was more about just watching how each celebrity interacted with his or her fans.   I sat and watched each celebrity for at least 10 minutes, just silently watching how they acted.

In particular, I spent time sitting with Marina Sirtis, Nicole de Boer and Garrett Wang – I chatted with each of them a little bit but I mostly just watched how they took time to have a discussion with each and every fan, regardless of their native language and regardless of the fact that there were huge queues – they took the time to speak with each and every fan.  They connected with their fans, even if just for a moment and in some cases the connections were much stronger.  I oberserved one instance betwen Wil Weaton and one of his fans where Wil was almost brought to tears by the signiture of a former co-star no longer with us, on a poster.  Wil was the last person to sign, something he talked about on his own blog.

My point is, celebrities are often portrayed by the media as snobs or as people who care little about their fans.  They are portayed as unapproachable monsters that will spray you in the face with pepper spray or worse if you get too close.  I’ve never believed this and this is always why I am so un-phazed when I speak to celebrities.  I recognise that most of them are just like us, friendly and approachable, they just have bigger houses and faster cars.

There is a genuine desire here to meet the fans, to chat with the fans, to connect with the fans and to share at least one emotion with the fans, even in the highest pressure moments when the queues are the largest.

I took over 500 photos during these autograph sessions and I have picked out some of the best ones to share with you here – I hope you will view them, enjoy them, and remember some of what I’ve said here.

Take it off. It’s National No Pants Day!

Contrary to popular opinion, Cohas’ birthday is not the only day to celebrate National No Pants Day.
You heard right…the first Friday in May is reserved to drop trou!

No Pants Day is a prank that that began in the mid 80s which some groups have made into an annual event. The prank is based on the premise of having people attend an event not wearing any pants (trousers). Participants are challenged to act as if there is nothing strange about not wearing pants in public. The liberation of breaking a social taboo and seeing the reaction of people not aware of the event generally makes the event fun for its participants.

Join us and other equally exposed revelers for a goofy good time or make a donation of gently used dress pants or cash (you’ll have to figure out where to stow your wallet). Leave your trousers at the door to celebrate National No Pants Day on Trek Radio and all around the universe.

Couples of FedCon XX #1 – Robert & Tina

One of the best things I got to experience at FedCon XX this year in Germany, was the chance to see, watch and speak to boyfriends and girlfriends or husbands and wives that had met and gotten into a relationship as a result of FedCon.   I directly met and spoke to around 3 couples that had met via FedCon and I saw dozens of others that I didn’t have time to speak too.

The very first FedCon couple I met were Robert and Tina – they met at RingCon a couple of years ago and then got into a relationship through FedCon – you can download a short interview with the couple by clicking here and here is a picture of the lovely couple:

Fedcon XX Day 4 – Summary + FedCon Review

Day 4 of FedCon concluded on Sunday and with it the end of the 20th Fedcon in Dusseldorf, Germany.

As the fourth day of a convention that usually runs for only three days, the last day of the convention was a little bit slow and there were visible signs of people and vendors packing everything up, ready to clear out after 5pm when the closing ceremony was completed.

Panels on the day included Nicole De Boer as well as joint panels from Wil Weaton & Marina Sirtis and Garrett Wang & Robert Duncan McNeill.  Both panels were fantastic however things did start to get a little bit repetitive with alot of the same questions being asked the the same gags being played.  The day was a lot shorter as well, kicking of at around 10am and finishing at 5pm.

FedCon XX has been a fantastic experience in terms of meeting the fans, meeting the vendors and making friends. To my new friends: Eileen, Maja, Holger, Guther, Filip and Felix all from Germany, Margarita (a person, not the drink) from Kazakhstan, Erland from Norway and Tabitha and Steven from Switzerland, I just want to say that it was fantastic meeting you all and that I hope we can all stay in touch.

To the numerous girls of Fedcon that I’ve photographed and taken photos with over the past few days, I hope you’ll drop me an email to zach@startrekradio.com so that we can get to know one another a bit better.

And to those wonderful couples I met who were lucky enough to meet each other and find love at previous FedCon’s, I’d also love to get to know you all more as I think your FedCon love stories are really fantastic.

However, with all of that said, FedCon XX was not without its problems on the management end; Trek Radio met at least 15 people who had flown to FedCon from countries such as Scotland, Norway, Switzerland, Greece, Sweden and so forth on the basis that FedCon is promoted as an international convention.   All of those people speak English as a second language and speak no German.  Almost all attending Germans also speak English as a second language too. And all of the attending celebrity guests did their panels in English, so for large parts of the convention to be solely in German, really upset alot of people.

The opening ceremony, closing ceremony, talent show and several secondary panels were all almost completely in German and this alienated alot of people. These are people who spent over £1000 each to come to the FedCon who felt that they had missed out on large parts of the convention due to them being in German.

In addition, despite Trek Radio having had prior contact with all attending Star Trek celebrity guests and confirming interviews with them, the management at FedCon were left to schedule these interviews so that they did not conflict with autograph sessions, panels and other commitments.  Over the course of the 5 days we were at Fedcon, we were granted two interviews out of second that we were supposed to do and in one case, we met the management at 10am on a day to confirm an interview at 1pm on the same day. We arrived at 1pm and were told it had been rescheduled to 11.30am – the management had 5 ways of contacting us (walkie-talkie radio, cell phone, SMS, the tannoy system and a second cell phone) and this was the first we heard of it – absolutely attrosious.

Finally, Trek Radio has to object to the way that the management treated press – we saw multiple cases of press arguing with the management presumably over some of the same issues we had which included being guarenteed NO seating whatsoever in the panels (generally speaking, press would normally be giving first or second row seats); all members of the press were left to free-for-all and PVP for any seats that might be available which often meant we ended up in the back row.  In addition, different members of management seemed to have conflicting information and several members of management and security were downright rude.

Do not get the wrong impression, the celebrity guests at FedCon were great and the 5000+ attending guests were fantastic – I met so many people and made so many friends. However I feel it’s just a great shame that the press were treated so badly in some cases.

All of that said, I would still recommend the FedCon to any of you that might be considering going next year.  Trek Radio will be working with a local hotel in Dusseldorf to arrange a hotel room discount and shuttle service to and from the convention for Trek Radio listeners that attend,  so despite having a bitter taste in our mouth about our treatment and the treatment of some of the guests who invested huge amounts of money to get to the FedCon, we will be back there next year if only to meet the great friends we made this year.

I also want to give a special shoutout to the folks at GameForge – you guys absolutely rock and treated us like kings for the entire duration of the convention.  I hope that we have a long and succesful working relationship together and for those of you who are waiting with baited breath for Infinite Space, I can safetly say that its a fantastic and awesome game, you will not be dissappointed.

Please keep an eye on the Trek Radio website over the next few days as we have tonnes of additional post-con articles coming up as well as mini-interviews, video footage, more photos, audio clips from all panels and much much more.

Stay tuned!
