New Star Trek Series in 2017
STAR TREK RETURNS TO THE SMALL SCREEN
StarTrek.com reports CBS Television Studios has announced the development of a new Star Trek series to launch in January.
“The brand-new Star Trek will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966.”
Alex Kurtzman and Heather Kadin will serve as executive producers for the new series. Kurtzman co-wrote and produced the 2009 Star Trek film with Roberto Orci, and 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness with Orci and Damon Lindelof. The new series will be produced by Kurtzman’s Secret Hideout in association with CBS Television Studios.
According to the StarTrek.com article, “The new television series is not related to the upcoming feature film Star Trek Beyond which is scheduled to be distributed by Paramount Pictures in summer 2016.” Does this mean the new characters will be adventuring in the alternate reality of the films, or does “unrelated” mean it will be set in the Prime Universe? We will have to wait and see.
…BUT NOT TO TELEVISION
“This new series will premiere to the national CBS audience, then boldly go where no first-run Star Trek series has gone before – directly to its millions of fans through CBS All Access,” said Marc DeBevoise, Executive Vice President/General Manager for CBS Digital Media. “We’ve experienced terrific growth for CBS All Access, expanding the service across affiliates and devices in a very short time. We now have an incredible opportunity to accelerate this growth with the iconic Star Trek, and its devoted and passionate fan base, as our first original series.”
The new Star Trek series will be the first original series developed specifically for CBS All Access. All previous Star Trek series, along with thousands of episodes from other CBS shows past and present, are currently available for streaming online on the subscription-based service. The $5.99 monthly fee includes local CBS broadcasts and over 7,500 episodes on-demand. A one-week free trial is available on the All Access website.
In order to watch the new Star Trek and all other CBS All Access content on your television rather than your computer monitor or tablet, you will need a media streaming device such as Chromecast, Apple TV, Roku, or similar products.

I don’t enjoy watching on small screen like tablets and computers. I want to be able to access this series on my big screen TV. I think this is a huge mistake. Make it available on CBS network TV in 4GHD.
