STO Sets a Course for Las Vegas!

DISCUSSION WITH THE DEVELOPERS PANEL ANNOUNCED

Last year over 20,000 of our closest friends partied like a Spock Star at The Rio Hotel and this year we intend to rock the Prime out of the Directive once again! Since 1971 Creation Entertainment has staged over 2,000 fan conventions, and this August members of the United Federation of Planets are mingling with over seventy-five of their favorite “Star Trek” heroes and villains.

Brandon Felczer, former columnist for Massively, hosted last year’s “Dine with the Devs” event as an informal gathering at a local restaurant. The function, simulcast live over the internet by Trek Radio, was so successful the restaurant space was filled to capacity and many hopefuls were turned away at the door. Not to worry, the enchanting Terilynn Shull has moved this year’s event to the spacious DeForest Kelley theatre.

TrekRadio.net and Massively.com are proud to host a Q&A session Saturday, August 11th, at 11:00 AM local time with the Star Trek Online (STO) Development Team. This year marks Cryptic Studios’ first ever panel appearance at Creation Entertainment’s Official Star Trek Las Vegas Convention. Cryptic staff will bring gaming and Star Trek fans alike all of the behind-the-scenes news and information they crave. Interact directly with Cryptic employees at this year’s “Discussion with the Devs” event. Representatives in attendance include:

  • Daniel Stahl, Executive Producer – Makes it so!
  • Jesse Heinig, Content Designer – Responsible for the implementation of concepts, objects, maps, story creation and development.
  • Thomas Marrone, UI and Concept Artist – Creates art assets for icons and objects, pogs for ships, and interface elements for mini games and banks.
  • Brandon Felczer, Community Manager – Monitors forums and media outlets, assembles blogs, and coordinates public relations and press releases.

The developers will be answering your questions and presenting exciting audio-visual tidbits for the convention crowd; including trailers, “sneak-peaks” of upcoming game content, as well as some cool surprises for those in attendance! So whether you’re a player, fan, or green-blooded hobgoblin this panel will have something for you!

With so many Humans, Klingons, Romulans and others attending the event, there is bound to be a massive turn-out. Don’t miss the galaxy’s greatest party, Creation Entertainment’s Official STAR TREK Convention, coming to the fabulous Rio Suites Hotel in Las Vegas on August 9-12, 2012.

The Gorn Supremacy – E3 2012

Field of Dreams

Space, the final frontier… well, perhaps, but it was not the number one destination of this year’s E3 in Los Angeles. No, that honor goes to Namco Bandai’s Star Trek Theater. It was there that I dutifully took my seat, put on my 3D glasses, and let Giacchino’s magical score wash over me.

The Star Trek: The Game demo continued with the obligatory starship porn. A memorable flyby around the Enterprise, a seamless transition through the window to the bridge, and the story was well on it’s way.

And what a story it is.

Surprise surprise, New Vulcan is in trouble. Didn’t we learn from the first movie that nothing good ever results from contact with the Vulcan homeworld?

The demo showed off a unique split gaming mechanic. Each character has his own story. We saw different perspectives, one of Kirk doing his command schtick and another of Spock manning the sensors. With a potential crisis looming, the two protagonists headed down to the transporter and that’s when the real fun began. This is where the split storytelling elements started to shine. It was subtle, but it caught my attention… when the dapper Captain strolled down the corridor he received a wink and a smile from an Orion. Spock went down a moment later and she simply turned around paying him little notice. If this type of attention to detail and character is the standard and not the exception then this will truly be a great Star Trek gaming experience.

Bridge

Enter familiar cover-based gaming. The intrepid Enterprise duo receives a cold welcome from some unruly scientists and are forced to set phasers to stun.

After a blast, a nerve pinch (so awesome), some fancy scanning, and a Cumberbatch eureka moment (it’s a toxin affecting the Vulcans) Kirk and company make their way to the surface.

Enter the big reveal… here there be Gorn!

Gorn

These Gorn are not the slow, rubberized versions we are used to from the original series. These are fast, lithe, and scarier than Picard’s Risan Speedo. If I took anything away from this presentation, it was a recurring nightmare of that screaming, fang-bared Gorn.

And now the running and the screaming…

RUN

Pine and Quinto (cause really, the resemblance to the actors is uncanny) soon found themselves surrounded by the scaly beasts. Not even Scotty could beam them out and they soon found themselves cornered and outnumbered. Kirk doesn’t like to do anything small so he orders an orbital strike, obliterating the Gorn and half the platform in the process. Of course this alerted other Gorn vessels who began to swarm the area and then… well… you’ll just have to buy the game to find out!

All in all, a very effective presentation. Sure, there were some noticeable issues, such as what I can only describe as a texture bug making Scotty look like he just got out of the pool, but over all it was a smooth and polished demo. This is definitely a game to watch. Check back often and tune into Trek Radio for all the latest news, information, and developer interviews!

New Trek Radio Web Design Launches!

The staff here at Trek Radio are very excited to announce that our brand new web design is now online! After 6 months going through the design and development process, our new website design and logo have finally launched today.    Trek Radio founder Zach Nicodemous commented:

We hope that our listeners will find this new design much more visual and responsive than our previous designs.  We have completely overhauled the way our website works – something which can be seen most when switching between pages using our new ajax powered “slipstream” interface which seamlessly transfers you to the new page.

Our listeners will also note a brand new schedule system in use on the schedule page and many other cool features throughout the site.

If you notice any bugs or issues with our new website, please reply to this post with a comment, describing the problem and if possible, letting us know your browser and browser version!

We have some exciting events coming up over the next few months, so as always, keep those radio dials tuned to Trek Radio!
