Merry Trek-mas Day

“And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow, stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags. And he puzzled and puzzled ’till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store. What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more.” – Dr. Seuss

Happy Hanukkah from Trek Radio

This year the sunset of December 8th marked the beginning of Hanukkah, the eight-day Jewish holiday known as the Festival of Lights. The Festival of Lights is a celebration of the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem in 165 BCE.

Many of our friends and family in the Star Trek community practice the Jewish faith, including William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, and J.J. Abrams, among others. The Jewish culture and faith have played a significant role in Star Trek, with the most notable influence being the Vulcan salute which is explained by Rabbi Yonassan Gershom in “Jewish Themes in Star Trek.”

One of the primary activities during Hanukkah is the lighting of the Menorah candles over eight nights. Star Trek fans are crafty and creative when it comes to celebrating the Festival of Lights, as evidenced by this epic Menorah as seen on Evil Mad Scientist.

As the Menorah candles are kindled, Hanukkah songs are sung, and dreidels are spun with Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock, we at Trek Radio wish our Jewish friends and family a very Happy Hanukkah. Shalom!
