Something special happened tonight after 1701-D soared across the big screen and hearing Goldsmith’s season 1 theme blare out over the cheers and applause once she went to warp. I was twelve years old again, sitting with my family at 7pm on a Saturday night. Yes, we know these shows by heart, but I found myself scanning the contours of the hull as she passed by in glorious HD just like I did in ’87, looking for every detail on what will always be my favorite Enterprise. It was like seeing the it anew and brining out some old friendships we all hold deep in our hearts that perhaps we’ve not thought of for some time. I hope CBS and Fathom does more of this so we can keep going back to that more innocence time when cynicism wasn’t in almost everyone you meet and the joy I felt watching mentors of my youth with total strangers sitting next to me in the theater, can be rekindled.
If the cast reads this, I hope they’ll be glad to know that for 2.5 hours in our east coast theater, it was the late 80’s again. We admire you now as much now as we did on those weekend evenings with each new show. We may have not seen you since Nemesis in ’99, but being watching your performances tonight in such clarity made me (and hopefully all) realize how much I miss my childhood and I’ll be taking a trip back there more often now with these wonderful shows. No good byes, just great memories!
