EPIX GETS CLOSE UP WITH THE CAPTAINS

In the summer of 2011 William Shatner and EPIX released an insightful and moving documentary called The Captains in which William Shatner traveled the world to connect with the actors who commanded principal roles as Starfleet captains in Star Trek. Available to stream anytime, each episode of The Captain’s Close Up focuses on one of the actors who embodied a Starfleet captain in the television series. The stand-alone episodes for William Shatner, Patrick Stewart, Avery Brooks, Kate Mulgrew, and Scott Bakula feature additional footage and info including vignettes with the cast and crew who worked closely with the captains.

In celebration of The Captains Close Up, EPIX is partnering with Trek Radio to give away 10 limited edition posters featuring cover art from the original 2011 documentary The Captains.

Recently Anthony Montgomery released his original graphic novel, Miles Away, published by Anarctic Press — and this Saturday, May 4, he will join us live on-air to chat about it at 3pm PT / 6pm ET / 11pm GMT!

Known to Star Trek fans as “Travis Mayweather” on Enterprise, Anthony Montgomery has created Miles Away, a new comic book series featuring a seemingly average teenager swept up in an intergalactic adventure:

16-year-old Maxwell Miles is like most teenagers — full of questions and insecurities. For ten years, one question has haunted him: “Why did I lose so much, so early in my life?” With both parents disappearing under mysterious circumstances and a guardian who doles out vague and limited information, Max’s thirst for knowledge is rarely quenched. Unlike most teenagers, Max develops a superhuman ability, he is enlisted by a shadowy organization to battle evil around the globe, he allies with two aliens on the run, he saves their planet from destruction, he prevents an alien invasion and he has to maintain a solid grade point average despite having the laziest study partner on Earth. Max learns the hard way that some questions should never be asked because the truth hurts much more than curiosity.

Montgomery will be appearing in-person at Emerald Knights comic shop in Burbank, California on May 4 from 11am to 5pm Pacific to meet fans and sign copies of his graphic novel. A portion of the proceeds from this appearance will benefit Shriner’s Children’s Hospital. During this event, Anthony will join Trek Radio live on-air for a special interview at 3pm PT to discuss Miles Away and his journey of creating and launching a new sci-fi comic book series.

While May 4th is a special day for many sci-fi fans, this year it’s also Free Comic Book Day, when participating comic book shops around the world give away comic books for free to celebrate the medium of illustrated storytelling. Stop by your local comic book shop and pick up special FCBD issues, and while you’re there support your comic book shop and the comics industry with a few purchases.

Be sure to purchase your copy of Miles Away, and follow Anthony Montgomery on Twitter and Facebook!

UPDATE:

After a much-hyped and anticipated countdown, Cryptic Studios and Perfect World have announced the first expansion to Star Trek Online coming May 21, 2013: Legacy of Romulus.

Cryptic developers had said this update was so big and game-changing they would not call it Season 8; instead dubbing it “Big Update”, then officially referring to it as STO’s first expansion. After the announcement, we can see why.

After three years, STO players will be able to play as a Romulan or Reman with the addition of the Romulan Republic — STO’s new, third faction. Klingon Defense Force players will also finally be able to start a new Klingon faction character at level one and progress to level 50. In addition to the inclusion of the new Romulan faction and expanding the Klingon faction, the “Legacy of Romulus” expansion will also introduce new features and update existing elements in the game.

The game’s User Interface will be updated with new aesthetics and functionality, and the character creation screen will be completely overhauled. New traits, reputations, and enemies will provide players more content through which to progress. Another significant addition is the first appearance of Empress Sela in STO, voiced by Star Trek: The Next Generation alum Denise Crosby, who recently reprised her role as Tasha Yar during STO’s third anniversary.

Finally, the Khan rumors can be put to rest. Star Trek Into Darkness will not be an updated retelling of everyone’s favorite Trek film (though that would probably be awesome,) rather it’s shaping up to be so much more.

The just released international trailer for STID (that abbreviation makes me feel like I need to go to a clinic) gives us a lot more insight into 2013′s Villain of the Year – John Harrison.

Some slight spoilers follow so if you don’t want to know I suggest you run, not walk, to your nearest exit (preferably stopping by the gift shop on your way out.)

Still here?

Ok.

We learn that John Harrison, portrayed brilliantly by Benedict Cumberbatch, is a Rogue Agent. Think Skyfall but substitute Romulan Ale for shaken martinis. This “Bourne” again agent turned terrorist has a grudge to settle with Starfleet and in the process crosses one Captain James T. Kirk, who decides to take matters into his own hands, doing whatever it takes to derail this madman’s plans even if it means alienating his comrades and doing a trench run even the Falcon would be hard pressed to match.

And somewhere in there Carol Marcus takes off her clothes.

This is the first real story driven trailer to be released and it does wonders to get the green blood flowing. The acting looks strong. The story looks strong. The actors look strong. May 16th cannot come soon enough. But don’t take my word for it, check out the trailer for yourself!

One year ago on January 17, 2012, Star Trek Online made the successful transition to Free-to-Play. In some calendar notation systems, the date is displayed with the day before the month, appearing as 17 January, or 17.01 – which resembles the registry number of the original U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701. To celebrate the Free-to-Play anniversary as well as the significance of the date as symbolic to Star Trek fans, TimeWarp and Nydra will feature special segments on their show, Captain’s Table.

One of the goals of the Captain’s Table broadcast is to explore and promote storytelling. With this in mind TimeWarp and Nydra will welcome STO players to share meaningful stories about the inspiration behind the names of their starships. Is the ship named in honor of a mythical figure, a historical event, a family member, or something that holds significance to the player? Between 17.01 and the upcoming third anniversary of STO, TimeWarp and Nydra will invite listeners to join them on the show to discuss starship names live on-air, as well as reading some of the emails sent to them which highlight the stories behind players’ starship names. Players can also share the stories behind the names of their characters, and their character’s in-game biography.

In addition to sharing stories about starship and character names in STO, they will also be sharing the chance to win signed copies of the recently released “Cold Equations” trilogy of Star Trek novels by David Mack.

Send your starship name story to timewarp@trekradio.net between January 17 and February 3, 2013 to be entered into the drawing to win the three signed “Cold Equations” novels. One winner will be chosen randomly from the pool of participating emails received.

The winner of the random drawing will be eligible to receive the “Cold Equations” trilogy of novels (“The Persistence of Memory,” “Silent Weapons,” “The Body Electric”) with each book signed with a personalized inscription by author David Mack. Each book may have a separate customized inscription.

The winner will be contacted via email for further information such as mailing address and desired inscriptions. The winner will be required to pay for shipping and handling to receive the signed paperback novels. Standard U.S. domestic shipping averages $15 USD. International shipping rates may increase shipping and handling cost depending on location. Inquiries requesting an estimate for international shipping are welcomed.

Listeners may opt out of the drawing while still submitting their story to be included on the Captain’s Table broadcast. Please note in the email if the entry is not intended for inclusion into the drawing.

Be sure to tune in to Trek Radio and the Captain’s Table for a new live on-air interview with Star Trek author David Mack coming soon, and listen to the Captain’s Table presenting David Mack’s special broadcast, The Music of Star Trek Vanguard. For more information about David Mack, warp over to his official website, DavidMack.pro.
